The DNA Detectives Announces the Kits of Kindness Donation Program

One year ago today, The DNA Detectives introduced the Kits of Kindness DNA testing kit donation program. To date, the program has been responsible for over 410 people receiving donated DNA kits, and many of them discovering and being reunited with previously unknown biological family members. (Number updated 5/16/17)

The DNA Detectives Kits of Kindness Program was established in January 2016 to facilitate donations from those who wish to assist in purchasing DNA kits for those searching for birth family who cannot afford to DNA test. In many cases, donations come from those who have received volunteer help in their searches and wish to "pay-it-forward." We also receive regular donations from members of the genetic genealogy and adoption search communities who support our goals.

If you would like to donate a kit or request a donation please write to us at kits@TheDNADetectives.com. Monetary donations of any amount can be sent through PayPal to kits@TheDNADetectives.com or through this link:
click here. Checks can be sent to The DNA Detectives, 555 N El Camino Real #A153, San Clemente, CA 92672. One hundred percent of monetary donations go toward kit purchases and mailing costs. (Please note that DNA Detectives is not a 501(3)(c), so this is not a tax deductible, charitable donation.) If you have a kit on hand that you would like to donate to someone through our program, please contact us at the above address for an address to which to mail it.

In order for us to be efficient, all requests for donated kits must be made by sending an email to kits@TheDNADetectives.com. Requests sent to any other email address or through a Facebook account will not be accepted. Requests are reviewed about once every two weeks and approved recipients are placed on a waiting list, so please do not expect an immediate response to your email. If the request is urgent, please include that in your subject line.

Priority for donated kits goes to members of the DNA Detectives Facebook group who are searching for immediate birth family and are experiencing financial difficulties. Other types of requests are also considered. We prefer to hear directly from the person who needs the test, but will accept third party requests if the person in need does not have access to a computer.

When submitting a request, please include:

-- The details of your birth family search and what other methods you have already tried previously
-- If you are adopted, please include the the state and year of your birth
-- The reason for your inability to purchase a DNA kit
-- Your Facebook profile (if you have one)
-- The mailing address where you would like the kit sent. Please separate this out from the rest of the text so it is easy to see and use appropriate punctuation to ensure the kit arrives at the intended destination.

Requests can be made for any of the three autosomal DNA testing kits, AncestryDNA23andMe and/or Family Tree DNA's Family Finder as well as the Family Tree DNA Y-37 kit for males. (We typically recommend starting with the AncestryDNA kit due to the size of their database, so most of the kits provided to our recipients have, so far, been from AncestryDNA.)

Another way to support the Kits of Kindness donation program is to use The DNA Detectives' affiliate links when ordering kits or purchasing genealogy and search-related products. A portion of the commissions we receive from these sales goes toward purchasing kits for the program. These links include:

  1. Without a doubt one of the best programs in the world helping many find and reunite the families of thousands of : orphans, adoptees, daughters and sons of biological donors, kidnapped, switched at birth, including unknown births through no fault of their own or their parents. So many parents are also looking for their offspring. I hope this Kits of kindness program lives through the ages. I am proud and appreciative of the people running this program, I have personally benefited from their generosity in order to find my paternal family. so thank you to CeCe Moore, DD staff and the generous financial donors behind it. 2. Hey if you'd ever wanted to explore your roots, find lost family members, or explore your ethnicity this is the year to do so, and while you're at it why not save some money in the process, and in a round about way bless those that can't afford to purchase a DNA kit. I tell you this is a great program that has blessed me. And DNA Detectives ia a wonderful, powerful life changing group. AWESOME JUST AWESOME!!! Once again THANK YOU!!!!

  5. Thanks to this wonderful program I was able to take my DNA test from Ancestry late last summer. I am a adoptee from Florida which is a closed state so we don't have access to our original birth certificate yet. Thanks to this program and the help of a special search angel I was able to find my birth mothers side of my family. I am in touch with that side of my family and it is priceless! This is a great program to support people and help them find their roots.

  6. I have never heard anything about your group. What a great idea. I go to an annual genealogy conference, it would be great if the big DNA providers would donate a kit for say, every 5 kits they sell at conferences. Might persuade people to purchase a kit at the conference if they knew their purchase was paying it forward! Next kit I order will be through your site.
